EVOLUTIONS: A Living Timeline of Works by Women Composers, a blend of classical styles spanning three centuries. The infrequency of these programs makes each performance all the more special. Audiences will discover riveting and important works rarely heard on the concert stages.

Melodies in Motion with Medina-Zimmermann DUO

Melody is the narrative that drives the emotions in music.  Each composer explores the lyrical beauty of the piano and the clarinet.  Melody has always been a significant aspect of communication in music and is enhanced when harmonies intertwine with notes. Listeners will hear how each century used melody to express artistic ideas and emotion.  

In the 19th century, women were expected not to have serious or concrete musical knowledge.  Composition was never considered a venture for women.  However, women did compose and defy society's expectations, creating music despite what their male counterparts thought.  In our present time, women are free to be composers, but continue to experience challenges being seen and heard.

Alice Mary Smith and Marie Elisabeth von Sachsen-Meininngen give the clarinet a song-like dialogue with the piano. In the Schumann, we hear melody as a story of love and longing with lyrical lines from both the clarinet and piano.  Julia Perry provides the listener with melody as a meditative state of solitude and peace, while Margarita Zelenaia takes the audience back to the sounds of sacred Byzantine Chants.  Chen Yi drives her melodies in rapid flourishes, and Alla Borzova Scherzo makes the clarinet and piano spirited dance partners mixed with a contemplative, mellow jazz-inspired song.

Take a journey through musical time to the height of Romantic elegance, through the passionate works of Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, Clémence Grandval, and their contemporaries. This event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $40 for adults and $15 for students. All proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Medina will give a presentation on creating opportunities - Opportunities come to those who prepare. Medina will give students tips and ideas on how to cultivate resources from school and have students collaborate on how to produce concerts in their community.

Medina will perform alongside Alliance University faculty with Artist in Residence pianist Margrit Zimmermann.
